Tilefish are a favorite for deep water fishermen along the Alabama gulf coast. These unusual looking fish have real big eyes and can see in almost total darkness. They are caught while bottom fishing in deep water. They are also known as Great Northern Tilefish. Scientist calls them lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps. These fish are a fine deep water fish. They are caught in water that is over 400 feet deep up to over a 1000 feet deep. They have a yellow fin that is located in front of their main dorsal fin. They have a lot of yellow spots on the upper half of their body with larger spots on the dorsal and anal fins. The other tilefish do not have the small fin in front of the main dorsal fins. They are usually less than 40 inches in length and most of them weigh about 8 to 10 pounds each.
Goldface Tilefish are another favorite of deep water fishermen. Some call them Atlantic Golden Eyed Tilefish. Scientist call them Caulolatilus chrysops. Their eye has a gold yellow iris. These tilefish have a golden yellow bar that extends from beneath the eye up to their nostril. Most of these Goldface tilefish are less than 20 inches in length.
