Want to learn how to catch fish in the surf or from a pier? The Gulf Shores Chapter of the Orange Beach Fishing Cooperative is now offering you a "G" rated, professional, private fishing guide for those of you who want to bring your own fishing tackle and fish from the bank and don't really know a lot about surf fishing, wade fishing, jetty fishing or pier fishing. If you love to fish and you want to keep yourself and your kids occupied with fishing activities in Gulf Shores, we have a personal fishing guide who will meet you and show you how to increase your odds of catching a fish in local waters around Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan.
Would you like to increase your chances of catching a fish in the surf or on a nearby pier? We solve the problem for people who love to fish, but only need some local information about fish species you can target in our area. For only $35 an hour with a $100 minimum, our personal surf fishing guide will drive and meet you at your location or at a fishing pier, jetty or inlet and show you how the locals catch fish. Our surf fishing guide will spend as much time with you as you need, as long as he does not have another client to meet. He will do whatever it takes to help you catch fish and can save you a ton of money by showing you only what tackle and bait you need to increase your odds of hooking a big fish.
We have found that many vacationers often find themselves at the mercy of someone who works in a bait and tackle retail store for reliable information about fishing from shore or in the surf. Even though those people work in a tackle store know about local fishing, you need to remember that they make their living selling fishing gear and bait in a retail establishment. They are often busy serving other customers and usually do not have time to give you the information you really need to help you catch fish. This is where a personal surf fishing and pier fishing guide comes into play. Our shore fishing guide is a professional angler who makes his living showing people like you how to catch fish. It is in his best interest to give you all the information he can so you can so you can reasonably have a chance to catch fish all by yourself.
At the Gulf Shores Fishing Chapter of the Orange Beach Fishing Cooperative, we understand that not everyone wants to go deep sea fishing or bay fishing with an Orange Beach charter boat. One of the biggest problems people have when they come to the area, is finding someone to show them around and teach them how to fish from shore and reasonably be able to catch something. We started this service three years ago and found it to be hugely successful. We have earned the trust of gulf coast vacationers over the years and are now offering this service full time.
Some of the best fishing on the Alabama Gulf Coast is done by fishing right in front of your condo or hotel. You see people every day with fishing poles stuck in the sand with their lines reaching out into the surf or in the bays around Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. You wonder what kind of fish they are catching and how they are catching them. Often, you see a lot of fishing, without a lot of catching. That is where we come in. Just like everything in life, knowledge is learned from watching others or asking a lot of questions and paying attention. Hopefully, you will learn quickly and the experience will not be too terribly expensive.
Our wade fishing, jetty fishing, surf fishing and pier fishing guide is David Thornton. He is from Mobile, Alabama and has been fishing the surf and piers for over 40 years. David has a wealth of knowledge and for a nominal fee, will show you how the locals catch fish. By hiring a surf and wade fishing guide like David, you get a personal fishing guide who will show you how to save money, show you what fishing tackle you need to have, how to rig your gear, help you choose your bait and show you where and when to go surf fishing or wade fishing.
David is a regular fishing reporter for local and regional newspapers, radio shows and magazine articles since the 1970's. He appeared regularly on the WKRG 710 am fishing show during the 1980's and 1990's where he aquired the nickname, "Pierpounder" due to the frequency of fishing reports from the Alabama Gulf Coast State Pier and other local fishing piers on the eastern shore. David also is a contributing writer for Coastal Angler Magazine and gives the Alabama monthly pier fishing forecast.
David says, "Even though David was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama fishing along with other outdoor activities has always held a special place in my life. It is difficult to remember back to a time when I did not fish or excel at it. In 1960 my parents built a house (and pier) along the eastern shore of Mobile of Mobile Bay near Mullet Point. All the fishing, crabbing, and other water related activities were sources of seemingly endless and carefree days in my childhood. And my college instruction taught me to further appreciate the unique diversity of our area and what it has to offer a visitor or a native born angler on a daily basis. Each day is a new experience and gift along the Alabama coast! While I most often enjoy the great fishing and camaraderie of pier fishing, I can just as easily relax on the beach with my feet in the sand and water while surf casting or even rock hopping on the jetties. Whichever way I fish, it is for maximum year-round enjoyment often utilizing light or even ultralight tackle. What better way to savor the efforts of the fish or the fisherman."
Depending on the fishing season, there are dozens of inshore bay fishing species of fish that can be caught while fishing in the surf or from a pier on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Some fish you can keep and some you will have to release, but one thing for sure, you can catch them all day long. You can catch Tarpon, Speckled Trout, White Trout, Ground Mullet, Croakers, Whiting, Flounder, Blackfish, Redfish, Bull Reds, Mangrove Snapper, Gray Snapper, Ladyfish, Pompano, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, Sheepshead and even a hard fighting Crevalle Jack.
As you can see, there are a lot of different types of fish you can possibly catch while fishing in Orange Beach in the surf, jetties or on the fishing pier.
David charges $35 per hour with a $100 minimum. His time starts when he meets you. All fees are to be paid in cash to your fishing guide just prior to departure.
