This past week has made for some amazing fishing in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. We have been catching a lot of Red Snapper on the Charter Boat Distraction. We are the leader in family friendly fishing charters on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
All of our fishing trips this past week have been amazing. We have caught a mixed bag of Red Snapper, Bonito, Gray Snapper, King Mackerel, Cobia, Amberjack and Grouper. Most of the guests that are fishing with us are keeping a few fish for dinner and releasing the rest of them. The Shipps Harbor Grill Restaurant has been extremely busy this week because all of our guests are taking their fresh caught fish over there to be prepared for supper after we return to port each day.
The high pressure system that has settled in over the Gulf of Mexico has been providing us with a clockwise rotation and westerly winds. Every day we have been seeing a westerly wind between 10 and 15 mph and the water current is moving at about 2 knots. This has made our light tackle fishing extremely interesting. Luckily, the fish we are catching are close to the surface of the water and we are having good luck catching big fish.
The trolling fishing on 4 hour charters for King Mackerel has been slow. I do not recommend taking a 4 hour charter until the west current stops running and the water clarity improves. These fish feed by using their sight and with stained waters, it makes it hard for the fish to see our bait. Most of the King Mackerel we are catching are offshore and deep in the water.
The 6 hour bottom fishing charter is proving to be the best investment for the money. Any bottom fishing charter less than 6 hours is not a good idea at this time. Fishing pressure close to shore has been strong these first two weeks of June since the Red Snapper season opened. 5 hour charters do not give you enough time to get offshore far enough to catch quality fish. The 6 hour trips are ideal for families because it gives you a mixed variety of deep sea fishing and different species of fish to catch.
