Today we had the opportunity to take our first family fishing that encompassed four generations. Mr. Len represents the first generation at a young 85 years. Mr. Jim along with his son Scott and his grandson Noah all came along for a great day on the saltwater in Gulf Shores.
We started the charter by heading south of Orange Beach. The seas were a calm 2 feet and the clouds were overcast with a rain shower on the horizon.
Our trollers were out in hopes of catching a nice King Mackerel on the way to the fishing reefs. We went up under a dark rain cloud and our troller went off. The first strike was unsuccessful so Lem free-spooled the lure. It worked. It was a nice Cow dolphin fish which is also called Mahi-Mahi. Noah was quick to get to reeling. This dolphin made for a good fight.
We kept trolling south and saw an opportunity to see a water spout in a rain cloud just south of us. Just as soon as everyone got to see it, it disappeared into the rain. We did get a good picture before it went away.
Even though it was starting to sprinkle rain, my radar showed clear skies on the other side. The rain was only a mile thick. We went through the rain and we rounded up on our first reef and began fishing. We caught Red Snapper and a bunch of hard fighting Amberjack. They were all too small to harvest but offered a great fight for light tackle.
We ended up getting caught by the rain and we had to move back to the north to get away from the rain. Even though the sun stayed hidden, we did manage to catch a mess of fish and all had a good time.
